The Kunsthistorisches Museum is the Habsburg painting collection installed in the Gottfried Semper building on Maria-Theresien-Platz — the world's largest Bruegel collection, the Vermeer Art of Painting, the Velázquez infanta portraits, the Cellini salt cellar in the Kunstkammer downstairs. The café under the cupola — Klimt's spandrel paintings overhead, the marble floor below — is the rendezvous that anchors any Vienna afternoon.
Book the morning slot for the Bruegel room and the Kunstkammer, the late lunch at the cupola café, the second visit for the Vermeer alone. The Thursday evening opening is the calmer alternative.
