The Maidstone is the senior club of the Hamptons — founded 1891, oceanfront, eighteen holes of links golf on the Atlantic, and a beach club that is the only proper one in East Hampton village. The door does not open without a member; the waiting list for new members runs decades. For clients who arrive in the Hamptons with the right introduction, an afternoon on the beach lawn followed by dinner in the main dining room is one of the last unselfconscious experiences of old Long Island.
If you do not have an introduction, the National Golf Links of America in Southampton is a serious alternative for the golf; for the beach, Gurney's Beach Club in Montauk takes day passes.
