Gurney's is the only resort in Montauk that puts you directly on the sand with a real spa, a real restaurant, and a real beach club. For honeymoons and significant birthdays, I book the Beach Cottages — separate entrance, ocean steps from the door, far enough from the main resort that the crowds at Scarpetta on Saturday night do not reach you. The Seawater Spa is the only one on the East Coast I send clients to specifically for the pool — heated Atlantic water, lap lanes, and a thermal circuit that earns the spa fee.
The Beach Club lunch on the deck is the right Montauk afternoon — lobster roll, rosé, the sand fifteen feet away. Avoid the resort on Memorial Day and July 4 weekends; book early June or late September for the version of Montauk worth the price.
