Chiltern Firehouse

André Balazs' Marylebone room — the hotel-restaurant that has remained the single most photographed door in central London for a decade.

Chiltern Firehouse is the Marylebone address that defined what a London hotel-restaurant could be when André Balazs opened it in 2014. The 2024 fire closed the room for a year, the rebuild restored the courtyard and the ground floor without changing the proposition, and the dinner reservation remains the most contested in central London. The rooms upstairs are small but the room downstairs is the only one in the city that books a month ahead for a Tuesday.

Book the courtyard for dinner at 21h on a weeknight, take the crab doughnuts and the steak tartare, stay for the bar through midnight. Sleep upstairs only if Marylebone is the right base for the trip — otherwise eat and leave.
