Royal Mansour Marrakech

The King of Morocco's private hotel — 53 individual riads behind the medina walls, each with a plunge pool, a butler and a roof terrace.

Royal Mansour was commissioned by King Mohammed VI and opened in 2010 — fifty-three individual riads behind the western medina wall, each laid out over three floors with a bedroom suite above, reception rooms in the middle, and a plunge pool, garden and roof terrace at the extremes. The artisanal work — zellige, carved cedar, sculpted plaster — was executed by the kingdom's best workshops, and the property has remained the city's reference for that standard of finishing.

Book the smallest riad rather than the largest; the architecture reads the same and the privacy is identical. Take one dinner at La Grande Table Française, one at the Moroccan, and one at the spa lunch counter. The butler service is the only one in the city that genuinely behaves like a butler service.

The riad-as-hotel that no other city has.
