Golf · the Tomei clubs

The forested 18-hole courses an hour out of the city on the Tomei Expressway — Kanagawa and Shizuoka, the round for the day off.

The serious golf around Tokyo runs out along the Tomei Expressway into Kanagawa and Shizuoka — forested 18-hole layouts, par 72, built into the foothills with the kind of fairway maintenance Japanese country clubs do better than anyone. The day pass is by member introduction, the dress code is conservative, and the locker-room culture is part of the round.

Camille handles the introduction and the morning car. Take an early tee time, lunch at the clubhouse, and the late-afternoon car back into the city in time for dinner in Ginza. The right answer for the guest who refuses to spend a week in Tokyo without a card, and does not want the resort drive to Hakone.
