Bemelmans Bar

The piano room at the Carlyle, the Ludwig Bemelmans murals from 1947, the New York hotel bar everybody else is measured against.

Bemelmans sits on the ground floor of the Carlyle and the Ludwig Bemelmans murals — Central Park with the rabbits in waistcoats — are the only public commission the Madeline illustrator ever completed. The piano starts at five-thirty, the trio takes over after nine-thirty, the room fills in stages with hotel guests, locals, and the late crowd.

Arrive at six for a stool at the bar before the cover begins. The Martinis and the Negronis are the right order; the bar food is more interesting than it needs to be. The address Camille sends every first-time visitor for one drink on the first night.

Book it for the first drink in town.
