Estancia La Bamba de Areco

The 1830 estancia 120 km from Buenos Aires — Relais & Châteaux, eleven rooms named after polo ponies, and the home of the eponymous polo team.

La Bamba de Areco is the polo estancia — built 1830 as a post-house on the Royal Road, restored as an eleven-room Relais & Châteaux hotel, and home to the polo team that took the British Open in 2009. The eleven rooms are each named after a famous polo pony (except for Gato and Mancha, named after the two horses that crossed the Americas from Buenos Aires to New York in 1925), and the property runs two polo fields where guests can watch matches or take lessons during the season.

For honeymoons and special-occasion weekends that want the proper Argentine pampa experience, this is the right call — 120 km from the city, the gauchos at sunset, the asado in the garden under the ombú tree, the morning rides through the parkland. For wedding parties of forty to seventy the estancia does full buy-outs in spring and fall.

The proper Argentine estancia.
